Hi Guys

Firstly I would also like to commend the tone of this discussion - there is no mudslinging and also mutual respect shown to each other.

I would like to add my view that the regulations were poorly drafted - the intent is clearly to allow the pilgrims to enjoy freedom of worship without feeling that they may be subject to bigoted or sectarian protest. I don't think that this is the intention of the NotoPope Coalition. It does however seem bit curious why the coalition are targeting not only the public funding of the event (which is their right) but also Catholic belief. Why would it be of interest to a group made up of atheists, greens etc... what another religious body teaches? Doesn't everyone have the right to believe what they want to believe? The last acceptable prejudice would clearly appear to be against Catholics, and it must be said that why groups like this would even bother engaging in such a protest against the teachings of faith of one particular religion seems extraordinary. Would, for example a similar protest be held in Mecca against the Islamic teaching on gays, (which provides that even gay orientation, as opposed to just activity is evil). In the vast majority of Islamic countries, homosexual activity is illegal. We have the right to disagree with their teaching, but we don't have the right to enforce our disagreement on Muslims themselves, in the same way as protesting the Pope's stance on certain teachings could amount to religious coercion - which is what the laws were getting at. People have the right to believe what they want, no matter how ridiculous it is and to be free from any harrassment to adopt another stance. These protests run the real danger of simply hardening the resolve of the pilgrims to be more steadfast in their beliefs, which may be contrary to what the coalition intended.

Another point is that the Grand Prix, which continues is lose heaps of money is supported by the Government, but brings no where near the number of tourists to the country.

I am surprised that people seem to take issue with the Catholic Church in particular, when there several religious bodies which are either more conservative or more liberal than it.

"The pope's visit will encourage intolerance"....What a load of claptrap, what a sad way to vent your anger and bitterness against an organisation. If you want to bleat about intolernace just look at El -Hilaly,and thats just for a starter. By the way what about the big vilification issue ? Many of the so called left are having orgasms over the T-Shirts being printed about the catholic church being pedophiles,in other wards its acceptable to rubbish and vilify certain people's and a certain religion but lay off the rest that you people dont disagree with. How sad...!!! On the subject of offending (which most of are determined to have the democratic right to do ) how do feel about this one I found on the web ??? http://au.geocities.com/arabdownunder2003/aids.jpg

I only hope none of you are gonna be morally outraged, freedom of speech and all that.

P.S - The Pope causes aids in Africa ........
Adam,

First things - thank you for being so respectful of what I believe. Thank you for being adult and mature in your choice of language. You can disagree with me all you like and that's completely your choice but, please, at least have the decency to treat me with respect. There are dozens of flaws and inconsistancies in the evolutionary and atheistic argument but I would never belittle your beliefs regarding them.

Anyways. Sarcasm and negativity aside.

1. I'd (honestly) like some proof of the personal responsibility that is placed on the current Pope and the previous for millions of children and proof of blocking sexual education (i'm curious to see what information there is on this). Let's look at this a bit closer though. You realise it is possible for people to not have sex? yes? I mean, when it comes down to the simplest level (whoever the carrier of the virus was) the person had to have had sex with a carrier and then a non-carrier. How is this the fault of the Church? African people aren't stupid. They are completely oblivious to AIDS (in fact it is taught about in all the missionary schools). They know that unprotected sex is dangerous. It's like blaming gun companies for school shootings (all-be-it different..but it's still blame shifting).. If you got denied condoms and you went out and had sex with people with aids..you have been wronged - you're just stupid.

2. Wrong. Being against the morning-after pill and abortion is not a personal rights issue..it's a life issue.. Who are you to decide whether someone lives or dies? simplest way to put this - case study: a man shot a woman who was pregnant and both died (mother and baby). Man was given 2 life sentences for TWO counts of murder. This woman was 5 months pregnant. Now, if a woman gets an abortion at the same time - it's called convenience. As for the morning-after pill, well, apart from the serious evidence of the damage that RU486 and similar drugs do, how bout issuing a "night-before" pill - It puts you to sleep so that you don't make choices that you can't be mature enough to be responsible for?

3. The NSW government is well aware that WYD will bring 10 x that money into the country in tourism. How much money did the government spend on the olympics (which lost money by the way). It's one week out of at least a thousand (WYD wont be here again for at least 20 years).

I object to the money that is poured into the mardi gras. The mardi gras is a night where public decency laws are broken and if you say anything you are a bigot. Why is it so different? We aren't breaking any laws. We are peacefully coming together to enjoy our faith. If I organised a heterosexual mardi gras, I would get called a homophobe.

4. You have never had a right to harass people - that's against the law. Heaven forbid that you didn't treat people badly or disrespectfully. I read one post about someone wanting to have a series of shirts that spell out F**K. I mean. Gee. INTELLIGENT! If I was a cop, I'd arrest you on a normal day, not just during WYD.

I am in the process of seeking legal advice - most lawyers have knocked me back because I'm Christian. Quote: "If you were muslim, you'd have a case".

*sigh*.

God bless you,
Semp.

Protesters to challenge "thou shalt not offend" laws on Pope's visit

If Robert Mugabe passed a law permitting the arrest of anyone that annoyed him there would be international outrage. Yet, in democratic Australia, we now have such a law with Catholic pilgrims and the Pope being substituted for Mugabe. All religions are based on ignorance and unquestioning acceptance of patent absurdities. However, I don't mind what people believe in provided they do not interfere in the lives of others who don't share their faith. I enjoy nude bathing, having a glass of wine and reading about Darwin's theory of evolution which does no harm to anyone else. However, I would object if some Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or Catholic group tried to put pressure the government to outlaw or restrict these things. I object to the establishment of any religious schools that teach their own dogma as being the only true belief rather than encouraging independent thought. My objection to World Youth Day is that it has nothing to do with youth. That is just a palatable PR smoke screen for its real purpose, that is, to spread Catholicism. The Pope's visit will encourage intolerance, medieval thinking, superstition and Catholic ideas. Surely, we don't want our youth to be brainwashed into having that mindset! Overpopulation is the biggest problem in the world today and causes pollution. poverty and misery. The Pope and the Roman Catholic Church oppose effective birth control and thus are directly responsible for these problems. Why can't we demonstrate these concerns when the Pope comes here? Why does Mr Iemma want to silence citizens that have vaild points to make? Has the Catholic Church got so much influence on our political leaders that they have lost the ability to separate Church from State and to take away our fundamental rights? I support anyone who choses to break the new unjust laws, who refuses to give their name to police, who refuses to pay any fine or who organises any protest.

Jane, we are protesting the fact that our city and our own money have been given to an avowedly homophobic minority, and that new laws hae been put in place to limit our protesting.
I'd like to see such draconian measures enacted to prevent gay 'pilgrims' being "annoyed" during Mardi Gras!! That'd be the day!
Freedom of speech is not about having somebody's abhorrent views forced upon you, at your own expense, and being fined if you try to do anything about it. That sounds like fascism to me.
As for "protecting the kids", it's this fictitious manipulative bullshit they ought to be protected from, not the voice of reason.

Semp,
It appears that you've camped on this discussion list what makes it more interesting.
You miss the point. You can believe that a piece of cake transforms into the flesh of Jesus. It's up to you. I don't - for me it is still a cake. You may believe that if a few people utter a formula ("a prayer") it has an influence on the real world because Jesus or Virgin Mary will violate the laws of physics especially for you. For me this is childish and plainly untrue. But this is your faith - you are entitled to it and you can preach it.

What I don't like is not you but your organisation - the Church and especially its head for what it is doing.
What I hate is the fact that you Catholics are meddling with politics by:
1. Blocking sexual education in African countries (and not only there) what leads to overpopulation and makes AIDS crisis far worse. The pope (the current one and the previous, Wojtyla) are personally responsible for millions of children who are only conceived and born to die in inhumane circumstances. Most of these people are not Catholics and yet you guys think that it is moral to effectively impose your views on them because a mythical hero 2000 years ago said something about the way people can or cannot have sex. To me this is plainly wrong.
2. Meddling with other stuff like gay rights or rights to have a morning-after pill or an abortion. You don't have to have homosexual sex. I never had because I am heterosexual. But if these people want their rights to be recognised by the state I have nothing against it - exactly as your rights to have a prayer or two. Therefore I am for the rights of gay people for their relationships to be recognised as marriages as much as for your right to go to church on Sunday.
3. Getting the NSW Government to block the city for a week and spend >$100 mln of taxpayers money on your organisation because some of the members of NSW Labor (right wing faction) want to get votes of the Catholics. You could have organised your meeting elsewhere but you wanted to make a Big Statement at my expense.
4. Imposing ridiculous laws trampling on my personal freedom of expression what makes NSW looking like Eastern Europe under Soviet domination.
And these are examples of what the Catholic Church has been doing for the last 1650 years because only you know the Ultimate Truth given to you by God (exactly as the followers of Mohammad the Prophet and a few other guys) and anyone else is a sinner or has signed a pact with the Satan or, even worse, is an Atheist like me.
By the way If you feel discriminated at the uni due to your religion why haven't you sued for religious discrimination?
